We have designed and built a brand new website for the Welsh Assembly Government’s traffic management and information service, Traffic Wales.

The bilingual traffic management service site provides up-to-date traffic information from planning journeys and routes to checking traffic flow during rush hour. The new site also includes an advanced mapping system that incorporates all the traffic information that you need to know into a single and easy to use interface.

Traffic Wales Manager, Simon Jones comments, "The way the site now operates will not only lead the way in delivering fast, up-to-date and accurate travel information to the Welsh public and beyond, but it will also show that Traffic Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government is at the forefront of delivering a first-class, innovative advice service to motorists."

We were commissioned by Traffic Wales to design a website that was informative but most importantly user-friendly. Taking this ‘user-friendly’ requirement on board, we decided that all the essential traffic data should be incorporated into one easy to use map. Sequence System Development Director, Phil Murphy comments "Previously when planning a journey, site users would have to click onto different areas of the website to find out various items of traffic information. Using the new map it is possible to obtain all the information you require in one action - an exciting development."

By zooming into the map you can view live CCTV camera images on all the major roads and motorways in Wales and you can see up to the minute information on incidents, roadworks and congestion levels.

The website also includes a suite of personalisation tools that enable users to receive information relevant to them. You are able to define a journey consisting of roads that you need to use and then you can opt to be notified by RSS feed, SMS text or email when the journey is affected in anyway.

Phil concludes "By using push technologies like RSS, SMS and emails, Traffic Wales is able to send traffic information immediately into the hands of those that it might impact – thus allowing travellers to make choices about how, when and where they might travel".
