People's Collection Website

The People’s Collection project was commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government under their remit to protect and nurture Welsh history and heritage including museums, archives and libraries.

An important One Wales commitment to develop an innovative approach to collect, interpret, distribute and discuss Wales' cultural heritage in an online environment, the People’s Collection showcases Wales’ archives in an engaging and approachable way, appealing to a wide audience including experienced archivists, school children, amateur genealogists and history buffs

The website, commissioned in conjunction with the Royal Commission, the National Library of Wales, National Museum Wales, BBC Wales and Culturenet Cymru, displays content generated through web service feeds from the project stakeholders alongside content generated by users.  The site also contains a wealth of rich media including videos, photos, audio clips and interactive mapping which layers Bing and Ordnance Survey on top of archived maps allowing users to compare current views of Wales and where they live with historical views and data.

Soft launched at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in August 2010, the final project is an innovative and stylish blend of modern design, leading technology and historically important information which stimulates site visitors to upload their own stories and experiences to add to the archive.

The People’s Collection website (www.peoplescollectionwales.co.uk) is supported by the Trails Cymru mobile app which is available on the iPhone and Android platforms.
