Trails Cymru Mobile App
The People’s Collection project was commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government under their remit to protect and nurture Welsh history and heritage including museums, archives and libraries.
We developed the People’s Collection website as an innovative approach to collecting, interpreting, distributing and discussing Wales' cultural heritage in an online environment. To extend the reach the project stakeholders, which included the Royal Commission, the National Library of Wales, National Museum Wales, BBC Wales and Culturenet Cyrmu, recognised that the project offered a wider creative scope and it was agreed that a mobile application would enhance the scale of the project and would encourage audiences to contribute content while out and about.
As a result, Trails Cymru was developed for iPhone and Android platforms. The mobile application allows users to create their own heritage routes, map paths online and upload photographs, audio, video or documents as they go. The app is GPS-enabled so that trails can be overlaid onto a map. Each user has the ability to save trails and upload them to the People’s Collection website to share with others. The app also allows users to access live, instantaneous information on nearby trails by using GPS to retrieve results that relate to their current location.
The app, which is available through the iTunes store and Android marketplace, has extended the reach of the People’s Collection project allowing many more users to collect, interpret, distribute and discuss Wales’ culture and heritage in an online and mobile environment.
